Context

The High Energy Physics and Radio Astronomy communities are gearing up for groundbreaking instruments, necessitating digital infrastructures many times larger than the existing facilities. More than ever, in order to fully exploit new experiments and instruments, the scientific community needs access to world-class facilities like HPC centers, Clouds and eventually Quantum Computers, and will operate on a largely distributed and diverse global infrastructure.

Purpose

The SPECTRUM Community of Practice (CoP) aims to create a connected community of scientists and infrastructure managers having a mutual understanding of future needs, associated challenges and their possible solutions.

Goals

The goal of the CoP is to serve as a discussion forum across the HEP and RA domains to identify common directions for the design and operations of future systems, agreed processing models and solutions, and to provide feedback on investment to funding agencies and policy makers.

In particular:

  • Select and Define Use Cases: Identify at least 10 representative HEP and RA science use cases, outlining current and future requirements for computing, storage/processing, and services.
  • Collect Inventory Resources: Review existing services and resources relevant to the RI communities.
  • Assess Policies: Examine existing and planned access policies and federation methods used by European e-Infrastructure service providers.
  • Operate Community Survey: Develop and execute a survey to gather broader community insights.

Outputs

The CoP will produce inputs to the SPECTRUM project, which will be incorporated in the final SPECTRUM deliverables:

  • the Landscape Analysis, Access Policies
  • the Blueprint Architecture and the SRIDA

Membership

  • Participation in Working Groups (WGs) is open to interested experts acting in their own capacity and is on a volunteer basis; we will actively seek participation from stakeholders in the field.
  • WGs will work towards consensus in their decision-making processes.

Key Roles

  • Community Leader: Oversees CoP direction and alignment with project needs.
  • Community Expert Group: Maintains the charter, coordinates WGs, and ensures work aligns with project requirements.
  • Community Secretariat: Provides administrative support.
  • Working Group Chairs: Lead specific WGs.
  • Working Group Members: Actively contribute to WG goals.
